Description:

This conference features intensive workshops for primary care nurse practitioners, nurses, educators, and trainees who wish to augment their education and skills in primary care psychiatry. Primary care psychiatry is targeted at the most frequently encountered mental health disorders and treatments, which are increasingly prevalent in primary care clinics, emergency departments, specialty outpatient services, and academic health settings. Topics include the following disorders: Mood, anxiety, trauma-related, substance misuse, psychotic, neurocognitive, and personality. The mental status examination, culturally competent mental healthcare, suicide risk assessment/violence assessment, psychopharmacology, and collaborative care are also included in the course. Nurses and providers in the following practices can benefit from this offering: Psychiatry; Internal medicine; Family medicine; Emergency medicine; Neurology; Pain management; Nursing and NP faculty.

Course Objectives:

 At the completion of this course, the nurse will be able to:

  • Conduct a developmentally appropriate psychiatric evaluation interview to assess and diagnose common psychiatric mood, thought, behavior, and substance use disorders.
  • Select evidenced-based pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions for disorders that can be safely managed in a primary care setting.
  • Recognize serious symptoms of psychiatric and substance-use disorders that warrant immediate intervention by psychiatric specialist or that warrant referral to a psychiatric specialist for further evaluation and clinical management.
